Practical guidance for material selection.
Practical starting points for specifying furnace insulation, C/C fixtures, and replacement components.

Material selection
Before choosing furnace felt, define the process.
Soft and rigid felt solve different installation problems. Soft felt can conform to an assembly, while rigid insulation retains a defined shape. Begin with the available space, joints, and support arrangement.
The fiber precursor and heat-treatment condition are separate specifications. PAN or rayon identifies the starting fiber; carbonized or graphitized describes material processing. A familiar product name alone does not establish temperature capability or purity.
For a useful quotation, include thickness, cut size, quantity, maximum and continuous temperature, atmosphere, and any ash or contamination limits. For replacement insulation, add a drawing of the existing layers and interfaces.

Application notes
What to include in a C/C fixture design brief.
A fixture starts with the workpieces and the furnace envelope. Send the part drawing, weight, number of parts per load, and usable chamber dimensions. Identify the surfaces that may contact a tray or support.
Describe the complete thermal cycle, including heating, soaking, cooling, atmosphere, and transfer steps. These details help the design team review supports, clearances, handling, and material construction.
For a multi-level assembly, define the space between levels, how trays are lifted, and the expected load distribution. A photograph helps explain an arrangement, but a dimensioned drawing is needed to confirm fit.

Specification guide
A better request for a replacement furnace part.
Identify the component by its function, drawing revision, and equipment reference. Add overall dimensions, critical fits, tolerances, and photographs of the mating parts where possible.
Specify the required material construction and any coating, purification, or surface finish. Similar-looking carbon components can serve different roles, so appearance is not enough to establish interchangeability.
Include order quantity, expected repeat demand, delivery location, and required date. If a drawing is unavailable, start with a dimensioned sketch and mark the dimensions that must be confirmed before manufacture.
